Christians in the Middle East – Call for Papers
After the success of the Christians in the Middle East (CME) Research Network organised panels at WOCMES-3 in Barcelona, 2010, we intend to organise another set of panels at the upcoming WOCMES-4 in Ankara in August 2014. The theme of the panels will be ‘Middle Eastern Christianity in times of Regional Change’.
The Middle East is an area which has experienced numerous changes from within and outside the region. Internally, ideological movements, the establishment of different political systems and currents, new states and competition for hegemony, violence, socioeconomic developments and cultural expressions have led to diverse interactions including new frameworks for co-operation as well as upheaval and conflict. Externally, intervention from foreign actors has impacted upon ideas, knowledge, and culture, as well as influencing the historical state formation process and the contemporary political and security environment. These internal and external factors have played a part in the cultural, political, economic and social transformation of Middle Eastern societies, and in some contexts include conflict, displacement and migration. Like all citizens of the region, Middle Eastern Christians and their faith and institutions have been impacted by such regional change in the past and the present.
We invite papers to engage with one or more of the above variables (or a factor of your own choosing related to the overall theme) with reference to Middle Eastern Christianity during the time period covered by CME – late c.18 to the current day. We encourage submissions from an interdisciplinary perspective as well as a wide scope of disciplines including but not limited to:
- Cultural Studies
- Film and Media Studies
- History
- Linguistics
- Migration and Refugee Studies
- Political Science
- Religious Studies
- Social Anthropology
- Sociology
