ARPOA/IOHANES Symposium

Call for participation:
The research unit ARPOA of the Institute of History, Archaeology and Near-Eastern Studies (IOHANES) of the University of Balamand in Lebanon will hold an international symposium on the Religious Architectural Heritage across the Mediterranean in November 2012 in November 2012. The title is

“The Greek Orthodox Church architectural heritage: a comparative perspective with other Christian and non-Christian groups of the Middle East and its neighbouring areas”.

The symposium will conclude a research project launched by the University of Balamand to survey all the places of worship of the Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch (Lebanon, Syria, southern Turkey, Iraq and the Gulf States), with the aim of evaluating their cultural and religious heritage characteristics. Most of the results are on-line at http://www.balamand.edu.lb/ARPOA

We invite proposals from scholars working on this theme. The four workshops of the symposium are:
– The material aspect of religious heritage: specificities and reciprocal influences
– Appropriation, stakes and discourses on religious heritage
– The acceptability of the concept of heritage
– The concept of religious heritage

Deadlines:
– The conference will take place between 1st and 4th November 2012 at the University of Balamand, Lebanon.
– The applicants are requested to provide an abstract of about 4000 characters and a brief CV before 30th September 2011 to mdavie@balamand.edu.lb.
– The authors of accepted proposals will be notified before 30th October 2011.
– Contributors will be expected to provide full paper drafts before 30th September 2012.
– Working languages will be Arabic, French and English.
– Logistical information will be dispatched at a later date.
