Christians in the Middle East – Call for Papers

WOCMES III – Barcelona, July 2010

The Christians in the Middle East research network is hosting a two-panel symposium at WOCMES 2010.

The history and contemporary contexts of Christian communities in the Middle East over the last 200 years are emblematic of the balance between continuity and change faced by many within the region and throughout the world. Balancing tradition and modernity – in relation to liturgical practice, social and political engagement, missionary involvement, internal coherence, co-operation/conflict with other traditions and so on – are all topics of specific concern for these communities.  We want to use our panels to explore the diversity of Christian communities in the Middle East, both historically and presently, through investigating the different responses to/engagements with change that these different communities represent.

Although the panels will be divided into historical and contemporary contexts, we are keen to solicit contributions that explore the broader theme of continuity and change in a manner that appeals to scholars of all time periods and regions within the Middle East.

We are looking for submissions from scholars at all levels and invite contributions from as wide a scope of research areas and disciplines as possible, including:

In the same way that the concept of ‘the Middle East’ itself transcends strict definitions, we do not expect papers to fall into single disciplinary categories.  We welcome papers outlining theoretical and methodological problems and questions relating to change and continuity in order to encourage discussions, suggestions and critique.

All papers will need to be submitted in advance to the symposium organisers, in order that they can be sent on to the discussant for each panel.

Please send an abstract of 250-300 words for a 20-25 minute presentation, as well as brief biographical details, to Michael Marten (michael.marten@stir.ac.uk) by 1. September 2009.

Further information is available from the CME organisers: Christine Lindner, Fiona McCallum and Michael Marten.

Note: participants will need to register for WOCMES separately.
